For more than 80 years, Nature-Throid has helped countless patients manage their hypothyroidism. When we learned there was a need for an even purer option, we created WP Thyroid for those who are especially ingredient-sensitive. To support all hypothyroid patients, whether they were on our medications or not, we created a Facebook page where resources, information, and community could be found. Everything we have ever done has been done keeping in mind our top priority: patients. You know and deserve better from us.

We sincerely apologize to everyone who has felt severe strain because of the backorder. We take full responsibility and are doing everything in our power to get back to our usual pace as quickly as possible while maintaining our strict quality standards.

Progress is made every day on the Nature-Throid and WP Thyroid shortage and we will keep working around the clock until ALL strengths are fully stocked and available again.

Thank you for your continued support.

This page has been created to serve as a comprehensive stop for anyone looking for more information on Nature-Throid and WP Thyroid Availability and Quality, or for Additional Resources. Please direct all medical or health-related questions to your healthcare provider.

The strengths listed as in production are in continuous cycles of manufacturing, with cycles shipping upon completion. A completed cycle of manufacturing, however, does not produce enough to fill all backorders. It is true that we have grown, but we are still a small company with a smaller working capacity than may be expected. We could have done a better job with communicating this and apologize for any confusion.

If you are having trouble getting an available strength from your local pharmacies, we recommend checking any of the mail order pharmacies listed on our website. We have restructured the Get Real Now page to make it easier to find a mail order pharmacy that ships to your state. Please contact them directly to see what strengths they have in stock.

Most pharmacies do not order directly from us but through third party suppliers, and many large chains are required to order through a wholesaler. That means that once product is out our doors, we have no control over how wholesalers prioritize or distribute product among distribution centers and pharmacies, nor do we have any insight into a specific pharmacy’s inventory.

PROVIDERS & PHARMACISTS: If you are unable to obtain available strengths and have already submitted updated usage and/or placed an order with your distribution center, please contact us directly for assistance via the Provider tab on our contact page.

Pharmacies may report an item as “unavailable” or “out of stock”, reflecting their current inventory or the inventory of their wholesaler. This does not account for what we are manufacturing and/or shipping; the pharmacy may be receiving deliveries that are not yet reflected in their system.

Please let us know if your pharmacy is reporting a strength that is in production as ‘unavailable’ or ‘backordered’ by filling out the Patient-Pharmacy Form.

All pharmacies ultimately set their own prices, so we recommend asking for both the cash price and insurance price (pending coverage) when getting your prescription filled through any pharmacy – brick-and-mortar or mail-order.

We use the same ingredients and amounts of them as we always have. Ingredient lists for Nature-Throid and WP Thyroid can be found on our website, as well as in the FDA-regulated Prescribing Information insert that should come with every prescription. Ingredients can also be confirmed by comparing a past Prescribing Information insert to a new one.

Our strict quality standards apply to every part of our operation–from our guaranteed hormone levels to our materials and manufacturing–which is why we carefully source our thyroid from the U.S. and Canada only and are in production solely in the continental U.S.

All sourced materials comply with the mandated government standards of their respective countries of origin and meet all requirements set by the USDA. We do not, nor have we ever, sourced thyroid from China or manufactured outside of the continental U.S.

Since WP Thyroid and Nature-Throid contain thyroid USP (desiccated porcine thyroid), they adhere to strict United States Pharmacopeia (USP) monographs for potency and consistency and have guaranteed T4 and T3 hormone levels. Every batch is rigorously tested to ensure it meets or exceeds USP standards. WP Thyroid and Nature-Throid also comply with all USP pharmaceutical guidelines and FDA manufacturing and processing.

  • For improved navigability and use, we have updated the Get Real Now page to show where the mail order pharmacies that we work with ship. Please note that inventory can change daily and contacting the pharmacy directly is the best way to find out what they have in stock. Please check with the listed International Mail Order Pharmacies for prescriptions outside of the U.S.
  • We continue to closely monitor internal verification and adhere to our strict internal quality standards. See above for our more detail on how we verify our quality.

Despite what you may have heard, here are the REAL facts straight from the source:

  • We are NOT going out of business, nor have we been acquired by any other company.
  • There are no issues with our licensing and the backorder is completely unrelated to anything dealing with the FDA.
  • Neither of our medications nor any strengths of them are being discontinued.
  • We are committed to maintaining the affordability of our medications.
  • Our strict quality standards apply to every part of our operation–from our guaranteed hormone levels to our materials and manufacturing–which is why we carefully source our thyroid from the U.S. and Canada only and are in production solely in the continental U.S.
  • No formula changes have been made to either medication. Prescribing Information for Nature-Throid and WP Thyroid can be found on this website.

If you feel like your experience with WP Thyroid or Nature-Throid has changed, check the considerations below to see if anything needs to be examined or re-examined with your doctor.

Please discuss all questions and concerns with your healthcare provider and use medication as prescribed.

  • Taking the medication Both Nature-Throid and WP Thyroid are formulated to be taken on an empty stomach 30-60 minutes prior to food or caffeine with an 8oz glass of water unless otherwise instructed by your physician. Learn more about taking Nature-Throid and WP Thyroid.
  • Inconsistent use Nature-Throid and WP Thyroid should be taken as directed for best results. Inconsistencies in routine–for example, taking your medication at different times every day or skipping doses–can influence results. Learn more about taking Nature-Throid and WP Thyroid.
  • Switching brands Variances between different brands can affect some patients more than others, especially those who are particularly sensitive. Read more about switching brands at or check this conversion guide.
  • Other medications Some medications and supplements may lower the effectiveness of Nature-Throid and WP Thyroid when taken simultaneously, so it is important to take them at least one hour before any other medication. Calcium supplements, iron products, or antacids need to be taken four hours apart. Read more about other medications and thyroid medication at

  • Full Thyroid Panel Looking at Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) levels alone is not enough. A full thyroid panel evaluates your thyroid function and may include these blood tests: TSH, Thyroxine (T4), Free T4, Free T3, Reverse T3 (RT3), and Thyroid Antibodies (TPO). Learn more about Thyroid Hormone Blood Tests here and at
  • Procedures Timing of tests, fasting, taking other medications, and other health conditions can affect thyroid blood test results. Learn more about Thyroid Blood Test Procedures here.

Incorrect Prescription Fills

  • Check your pills Sometimes brands get mixed or substituted. In addition to having your doctor write a "dispense as written/no substitutions" prescription, you can safeguard yourself by checking your pills. Make sure you’re getting the medication your doctor wants you to have and check your Nature-Throid and WP Thyroid tablets.

Other considerations

  • Seasonal change Fluctuations in temperature or season can trigger changes in TSH. Learn more in this study.
  • Other health issues An underlying health issue like one that affects your adrenal function can impact thyroid hormones. Getting a saliva cortisol test, for example, can help determine if there is an underlying adrenal issue. Talk to your doctor about testing and whether supplementation is the right choice for you. Discuss all questions and concerns with a healthcare professional who can address your unique patient needs.
